A specifically designed course means you will build your midwifery knowledge and skills.
A mix of both face-to-face and online learning is provided to ensure you are able to be with childbearing women when required, including births, which occur at all hours.
Areas of study include:
You will have the opportunity to complete over 1,000 hours of clinical experience in a maternity service environment. You will participate in clinical placement in a hospital and continuity of care relationships with childbearing women. Students will engage in simulated practice in specially designed simulation laboratories and will participate in midwifery skills practice, including physical examination, and social and emotional assessment, with childbearing women and gender diverse people on midwifery placement under the supervision of a midwife/obstetrician.

This degree requires students to participate in midwifery professional experience placements in NSW Health and other partnering facilities. During placement, students will work within relevant guiding policies and procedures. Students must also meet all NSW and other partnering Health verification requirements before attending clinical placement.
Students should also be aware that they may be required to undertake midwifery professional experience placement and/or classes outside normal semester dates.
If you choose this option, you will be undertaking your on-campus studies at the Callaghan Campus, Newcastle and you will be placed at one of the following hospitals for your entire duration of your degree (except in the instance of a short term voluntary rural/metropolitan/international exchange):

Midwifery education and midwifery professional practice require students to be committed.
Students will engage in simulated practice in specially designed simulation laboratories and will participate in midwifery practices, including physical examination, and social and emotional assessment, with childbearing women and gender diverse people on midwifery placement under the supervision of a midwife/obstetrician. Students engage in peer learning on campus and virtually.
All students are required to be verified for midwifery professional practice. Verification includes screening and immunisation for infectious diseases, working with children and criminal record checks and other measures to ensure the safety of other students, staff and the people for whom they provide care. Verification must be completed in the first few weeks of the program in order to be eligible to undertake MPEP in semester two.
